Socks

Hockey socks (or stockings) are usually a thin or medium-weight cotton or nylon mesh material, and their primary role is to hold the shin guards in place. The socks usually reach up to your middle to upper thigh, and I've seen newer socks come with a fastener for your garter (though these are often paired). I carried multiple pairs of socks, as they're cheap. In a pinch, I've seen players play in sweats, but if you progress into league play, you're going to need these.
